What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine, practiced for thousands of years in cultures like traditional Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern traditions. It involves placing special cups (made of glass, silicone, plastic, or other materials) on the skin to create a gentle vacuum or suction, which lifts the skin and underlying tissues upward.

This suction draws increased blood flow to the area, promotes circulation, and is often used to relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, improve mobility, and support the body's natural healing processes, especially for issues like back or neck tightness. The most common type is dry cupping (no blood involved), while wet cupping includes minor incisions.

Many people experience temporary circular marks or bruises from the treatment, which typically fade in 1–2 weeks. It's frequently combined with massage for deeper relief, and while research is ongoing, it's popular among athletes and wellness seekers for its decompressive effects on fascia and muscles!

My Personal Journey with Cupping Therapy – From Skeptic to Believer

I used to think cupping was a bit gimmicky. Even after completing my cupping course, I came away not feeling the full benefits, mainly due to being in a classroom setting where there wasn't enough time to leave the cups on for the appropriate duration or to warm up the muscles beforehand. I also didn't enjoy the suction feeling at first. However, trust me, it's really not as painful as it looks, just a pulling type of sensation. So I left thinking I'd wasted my money and would probably never use them in my practice!

But I'd already bought the equipment, so I figured: why not experiment on my partner for fun (better than letting it collect dust!)? I started combining cupping with back massage, and the relief was noticeable right away. Then I wondered if it was just the massage doing the work, so I tried cupping alone after a gentle warmup of the tissues, and it still released deep tightness without needing intense pressure. That's when I became a true believer!

Now, I love incorporating cupping into my personal and client massage sessions at my massage studio in East Brighton, Whitehawk (located near the Brighton Marina) to tackle stubborn tightness. It takes treatments further by creating decompression that hands alone can't always achieve. I've had my partner cup me countless times too, so I could fully experience and understand it from both sides. These days, it's a staple in my practice (as long as you're comfortable with the temporary marks that usually fade within a few days to about 10 days).

The gentle vacuum lifts the tissue, creating shear forces that help fascia glide more freely. This boosts blood flow, improves movement and alignment, and reaches deeper restrictions. Results vary depending on your overall health, posture, and fascial system, which is why it feels transformative for some clients and subtler for others. In my clinic, I've seen it make a real difference for people dealing with desk tension, work related activity soreness, or chronic tightness.

Key Benefits of Cupping?

Clients often experience a range of benefits from cupping therapy, including reduced muscle pain and tightness, better posture alignment, and enhanced overall mobility. By creating shear forces that help fascia glide more smoothly, cupping boosts blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients while flushing out metabolic waste, leading to faster recovery from chronic restrictions or activity-related strain. Many report feeling looser and more aligned after just one session, with cumulative improvements in movement and reduced inflammation over time. Results can feel truly transformative for those with stubborn tightness, though individual outcomes vary based on your health, lifestyle, and how well your fascial system responds.

What to Expect in a Cupping Session in Brighton?

Your cupping therapy session in Brighton begins with a quick consultation to discuss your concerns, health history, and goals whether it's easing lower back tension, improving shoulder mobility after a long week, or addressing stubborn tightness from daily life.

Cupping can be combined with any type of massage if needed (such as Swedish for relaxation, deep tissue for targeted release, or sports massage for recovery), allowing me to customize the treatment perfectly for you, many clients find the combination enhances results by warming tissues first and then applying deeper decompression.

You'll lie comfortably on the treatment table while I apply a light oil or lotion for glide (especially useful when blending with massage), then place cups on key areas with gentle suction after a warmup to prepare the tissues. Cups may stay static for 5–15 minutes or glide across the skin for a soothing myofascial release effect. You'll feel a pulling sensation that's firm but relaxing, not painful and many describe it as deeply releasing.
